There isn’t much left of Jed Bowen when he is released from prison. A once proud and decent young American, Jed seems irrevocably changed by his incarceration – and the gruesome wartime experiences that preceded it. Dishonourably discharged from the Army and disowned by his family for his part in the prisoner-abuse scandal at Iraq’s notorious Abu Ghraib Prison, it is a broken and fractured Jed who arrives in rural Kansas to keep a promise to a dead soldier.
