The Major Event: An in-depth examination of inciting incidents

Plot/Structure Screenwriting ABCs

Summary

Your main character lacks strong motivation, the story doesn't have a clear starting point, the concept is flat... Sound familiar?

These issues most often go back to a single fundamental flaw: a weak, unclear, or entirely lacking Major Event at the start.

In this 45-minute master class, longtime script consultant/educator Karel Segers demonstrates why the Major Event is one of only three critical elements of your concept, and you'll learn how one shot from Spielberg's *Close Encounters* will help you boost the power and impact of your Major Event.

Presented by

Karel Segers

Karel Segers is a veteran story consultant, writer, and producer with over 40 years in the international screen industry. He sold his first produced screenplay at 17, and later worked as Head of Programming and Acquisitions at the Digital Broadcasting Co. in London. More about this webinar

During this seminar -- a sampler of the upcoming Story Series -- you will gain a deeper understanding of what is often termed 'the inciting incident', through an exploration of structure, character, and causation.

We will address some of the following sub-topics:

  1. Why does your story happen?
  2. A universal fractal framework
  3. Learn the lingo: "catalyst" to "call".
  4. Loglines that fail the concept test.
  5. Mamet's third question: Why Now?
  6. Prepare the hero to be unprepared.
  7. Zoom in on every beat.

Other questions Karel will answer:

  1. Why does it have to happen on p.12?
  2. Do we need to see it on the screen?
  3. Can it occur to a side character?

The seminar will empower you to come up with better concepts, improve your story structure, and keep your pitch audience focused.
