I’ve had a lifelong dream of writing fiction, but it has taken almost a lifetime to grow the guts to give it a serious try. (“Me, an author?”) Not that writing is new to me. For more decades than I’d like to say, I’ve made my living as a writer/editor of marketing collateral for companies of all kinds. And for years I’ve sketched plot ideas, thoughts and snippets of observations in journals…kind of sneaking up on the real deal.
Besides commercial copywriting, I’ve worked as a high-school French teacher, public relations coordinator, educational AV editor, and marketer of my and my husband’s photography business.
I wrote my first screenplay (Loser Takes All) back in 2006. I was pleasantly surprised to see it advance to the second round of the Austin Film Festival competition. My second effort, The Contract, was completed last year. It’s a suspense drama with lots of ironic twists.
My big “bucket-list” script is based on a memoir of a woman who frequented Parisian café society Before World War II. Her husband, a well-known poet, participated in the Resistance and died in a concentration camp. It’s a love story and tragedy, with intimate details of famous artists found nowhere else. The memoir is available in French only, which give me a leg up (alors!).
Earlier this year, I self-published an ebook titled, The Last Word Cemetery. It’s a genre-bender, combining a love story with elements of speculative fiction and plenty of satire.
