My professional writing so far has included fiction, non-fiction, journalism, plays, and both short and full-length screenplays. I'm a winner of the Writers of the Future contest, a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and the author of Talk the Talk: The Slang of 65 American Subcultures (Writers Digest Books, 2006). My fiction has appeared in publications like NATURE and DAILY SCIENCE FICTION, and my articles appear in THE WRITER, CLARKESWORLD, and a number of other venues.
I have a long technical background and a taste for introducing elements of speculation and the impossible into my work. My stories and scripts have featured elements like a bottomless pit, fraudulent angels, sailing over the edge of the world, self-immolating old women, alternate worlds, and meeting Albert Einstein in an elevator after a fatal accident.
I run the online neo-pro writers group Codex and blog regularly on the psychology of habits, writing, and fighting climate change. I'm a musican, black belt, and professional speaker, and I live in northern Vermont with my family, surrounded by trees.
