A black widow landlord and her murderous son court the wrath of the hounds of hell.
The story opens with EVE ASHBURY, 40-something shrew, burning ID cards from a wallet and an unknown person digging up the Ashbury house cellar floor.
Eve finds a drifter, VERNON, sitting on her front porch. Vernon explains he has been referred to Eve for a rental room and possible job, but their conversation is interrupted by a seemingly feral dog. As Eve yells at the stray, Vernon attempts to approach it and discovers the side of its face is scarred. Eve’s scumbag potbellied son OSCAR stomps out of the house with a shotgun loaded with rock salt, and Vernon has to intervene before Oscar blasts the dog – apparently for the second time. Upset by the Ashbury’s evident cruelty toward animals, Vernon starts to take off, but Eve begs him to stay, promising he has gotten the wrong idea. A hot meal and the promise of work sell Vernon on renting Eve’s room.
Vernon settles into his new room and cries over a picture of himself with his deceased son.
Some day shortly thereafter, Vernon labors on upkeep to the exterior of Eve’s house. He offers some of his lunch to the stray dog when it returns, which draws Eve’s ire. Later, as he moves a dresser while laying painting drop cloths, Vernon discovers a photograph of the “stray” dog and its apparent owner. Is this evidence that the dog used to belong to a former tenant?
As Vernon arrives for dinner, he shows Eve the photograph, but before he can confront her, Oscar blows Vernon’s head off with a shotgun. They bury the body in the cellar, steal Vernon’s bankroll, and burn his ID cards on the barbecue out back. Eve worries that the size of Vernon’s cash wad might indicate he drained a bank account and some family member might be looking for him.
Oscar comes home the next day and tosses Eve a carton of cigarettes while crossing the backyard to his garage apartment. The cigarettes land by the porch where Eve discovers the stray dog has hidden a litter of her newborn pups. As Eve angrily goes after the pups, the stray mother attacks and Eve kills the dog with a shovel.
Eve & Oscar bury the dead stray in the backyard and toss the pups in a sack into a nearby river. That night, Eve has a nightmare eerily similar to the pup drowning, but now with the sounds of hellish hounds racing toward her through the fog before she bumps into Vernon’s pulpy corpse cursing her. She wakes in a panic.
The following day, Eve & Oscar discover the stray dog’s grave mysteriously dug up, so they toss its corpse into the river. That night, Eve wakes from her nightmare again only to find it storming outside with an unearthly howl carrying in the wind.
Oscar comes out of his apartment with his shotgun to find soaking wet demon dogs menacing the house. Eve barricades herself in the house as Oscar shoots a dog which does not stay dead long. Locked out, Oscar flees around to the front of the house where the pack of dogs descends on him and rips him to shreds as he leaps in through the large front window.
Eve retreats to the basement where the dogs can’t get to her, but the zombified specters of her dead tenants wait.
The next day, Vernon’s ex wife arrives with a police escort. The cop goes inside and finds his way down to the basement where he discovers the final horror of Eve Ashbury’s life.
