Tyler Hatch is the ultimate football quarterback—a superior talent, he’s tall, big, and handsome. He is expected to be the number one draft pick.
He attends The NFL Showcase Combine, a week-long event where college football players perform mental tests and physical drills in order for NFL teams to access their abilities.
At the Combine, Tyler meets Lester Williams Jr. (L.J.) in person. The two had recently competed against each other in the Orange Bowl. Tyler rubs in the fact that he team won, L.J. tries to brush it off, but is defensive by the way Tyler’s team won, on a trick play.
That’s not all that happens to these two football players at the Combine… They also begin to have feelings for each other.
Any kind of male gay relationship in the NFL is unheard of. You do not come out as gay in the NFL. If you do, you will soon be out of football. You keep your proclivity hidden.
Tyler has been doing just that for years. In high school and college, he snuck around to meet with men. His college, LSU arranged for female dates with Tyler, but he always took the sneaking around as a challenge….”Can they catch me?”
L.J., on the other hand, has always been closeted. Until he met Tyler.
At the Combine, Tyler arranges to meet with L.J. in secret. They not only hit if off, but sleep together. The next morning, Tyler acts like he’s done (He’s used to doing the one-night-stand.)
L.J. goes home to workout and hope that he gets drafted. He is expected to go in the fifth round, not a guarantee that he’ll even have a job with an NFL team.
At the NFL, Tyler is drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars as the number one pick. He celebrates with his family. L.J. is there to congratulate him, but nothing else happens.
Two days later, L.J. is also drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Tyler had arranged it.
At the Jaguars training camp, the Jaguars Coach is treating Tyler as expected—he’s now the starting QB who is making a ton of money. He’s the franchise.
L.J. is being shipped away from his natural position at QB to try to make the team as a running back or on special teams.
Tyler will have none of that. He uses his influence to get L.J. as the number three QB. Tyler also arranges to again meet with L.J. He apologizes for giving him the “cold shoulder” and explains to L.J. how they’d have to go about seeing each other. It has to be carefully arranged and discreet. The only person who knows is Tyler’s trainer, Edmodo, he helps to get them together.
Their relationship heats up. Tyler has to keep appearances “proper” by dating a very high profile and up-and-coming actress (Marlena) while trying to find times to, at least, talk to L.J. on their secret cell phones. They carefully find ways to meet while the Jaguars season rolls along under the leadership of their rookie QB. They make the playoffs, but lose in the first round.
Tyler makes arrangements for L.J. to be with him for a month at a small Caribbean Island. They enjoy each other’s company, work out, and Tyler begins to teach L.J. how to be become a better NFL quarterback. They begin to fall in love.
After the month, L.J. returns home to his twin sister, Liv, his best friend. He also gets along well with him mom. The relationship between L.J. and his dad, however, has always been challenging. Being a biracial person (his mom is white, his dad is black) has never been a problem for L.J., except besides falling in love with Tyler, L.J. is also being to try to find his way as a black man. He’s trying to figure out where he fits in. And, he has never fit in well with his dad, a hard-nosed, controlling, football coach. Liv knows about her brother being gay, and she also knows that at some point, her brother and father are going to blow up.
It’s during the remainder of the summer that L.J. really begins to understand that he’s falling in love with Tyler—because he misses him so much.
Tyler arranges to have L.J. join him in Jacksonville for a Jaguars fundraiser. At the fundraiser, Tyler tries to tell the Jaguars Owner exactly how he needs to run his team. Also, Tyler is upset when he realizes the team had arranged a female date for L.J. Tyler tries to kiss L.J., but he doesn’t want Tyler and him to get caught. L.J. has too much to lose.
Which he does…The day camp starts for the Jaguars, Tyler is informed that the team has traded L.J. to the San Francisco 49ers. Tyler faces off with the Jaguars Owner who reminds him who owns the team, and it’s not Tyler. The Owner will have NO gay relationships on his team. The Owner tells Tyler to not only get prepared for the season, but he’s now has to marry Marlena.
A few weeks later, Tyler and L.J. finally talk on new secret cell phones. L.J. is upset that he got traded, the way he sees it he got traded because Tyler has to always get close to getting caught. He has this game that he likes to play with authority. And, L.J. got burned.
Tyler marries Marlena and excels on the football field.
L.J. is the backup in San Francisco, but gets the starting job when the starter goes down with an injury. The Jaguars try to keep Tyler away from L.J. and Tyler again tries to walk that very delicate line when he secretly visits L.J. in San Francisco. L.J. is furious with Tyler for again trying to sabotage L.J.’s success. L.J. is playing extremely well and is leading his team to the playoffs. How can Tyler do this to him, wreck is chance at succeeding as an NFL QB?
Tyler returns to the Jaguars and leads them to the playoffs.
Both their teams advance in the playoffs—the Jaguars and the 49ers are going to face each other in the Super Bowl.
During the two week hiatus before the Big Game, Tyler can’t take the hiding anymore. He feels that if came out AND won the Super Bowl, he’d have to be accepted as a gay football player.
He approaches L.J. with his plan. L.J. hates this plan. Now is not the time for Tyler to come out—and he refuses to throw the game so that Tyler’s Jaguars can win.
He didn’t work this hard to purposely lose the Super Bowl.
Tyler ignores L.J. and comes out at a press conference only two days before the Big Game. L.J. is there and reminds him that he’ll be playing to win. Game On.
The Super Bowl…
Tyler and his Jaguars do not play well in the first half as L.J. and the 49ers build a decent lead.
After halftime, they add to the lead. They may even win this game.
Until the fourth quarter when Tyler talks to his teammates and begs them to stand behind him, they all want the same thing on this field on this day—to win the Super Bowl.
The Jaguars begin to come back as Tyler also tells the Jaguars defensive coordinator to tell the defense to shut down L.J.’s running game. He’s not a confident passer. If he can’t pass, he’ll run. Tyler tells him that’s how you beat L.J. Williams.
By the last few seconds of the game, the Jaguars have fought back. They only need a field goal to tie the game and send it into overtime.
But, Tyler’s going to go for the win. L.J. knows Tyler is going for the win.
Also, one of the fast cornerbacks for the 49ers is hurt. L.J. begs to be put on the defense because he’s fast and he knows Tyler’s going for the win. L.J. quickly gets advice from an unexpected source, his dad, and goes into the game on defense.
Tyler does go for the win. He throws it to the wide receiver that L.J. covers, but each attempt fails. The final attempt lands in L.J.’s arms for an interception.
Game over. L.J. and the 49ers win.
Among the post-game chaos, Tyler finds L.J…. And they kiss…for all the world to see.
