Nearly everyone has had an uncomfortable encounter either with, or as, the new employee. Picture a family-owned business trapped in a revolving door of new employees; there’s always one coming and going. If you worked there you might begin to develop a degree of anxiety, or apprehension at the thought of “another” new person starting. You’re not alone, some of your co-workers feel the same. In fact, one of them even acquires a phobia over it. As an inside joke everybody starts referring to the new employee as the “New Guy”. This lightens the mood and even puts your co-worker’s phobia into remission. Other coping adjustments are made and eventually no one even cares to learn what the next new employee’s real name is. Ironically, this de-personalizing perpetuates the problem and now the revolving door of employees is spinning too fast to stop. In A.N.G.S.T. we have such a business, it’s called “Smart Motors”. Each episode introduces a new “New Guy”. Every New Guy is different and has their own motives for having accepted the job at Smart Motors. Some of them will regret having done so. Others will cause chaos, either intentionally, or unintentionally. However, what they all have in common is every one of them will be gone by the end of their respective show. The story engine driving the series is the Smart family’s uncanny ability to hire just the right person needed for each episode. The unique characteristics of these New Guys, their interactions with the permanent characters, and the unusual situations that develop from these interactions, has the strength to power the story arc for an indefinite period. The premise also allows for a seamless introduction of guest stars and cameo appearances. In addition, an automobile dealership is not only a fresh and novel setting, but it also offers ample opportunities for physical humor. Cars can be funny, and people can be funny about their cars.
