Through the death of my own mother, whose legacy was both a woman of love but also one of playing on sibling off another, the film reflects on the highly charged and often destructive factors that come into sibling rivalry in the wake of a parent’s death. It’s a film that lives in the dark quadrants of my own mind as well as that of everyone. We all confront death and our own mortality in different ways - in Dearly Departed, it is the element of greed, ego and distrust of one another that drives them to destruction.
