What happens to Romeo and Juliet after they get married and settle down to domestic ennui? Can modern-day star-crossed lovers survive a grumpy teenage son, disapproving parents, crippling mortgage, career disappointments and wealthy love rival to rekindle their ailing romance?
Rob and Jules’ relationship is at breaking point. Jules’ life increasingly revolves around the local amdram group and her parents’ exclusive tennis club. After his once-promising football career was crocked by injury, all Rob has left is Match of the Day and his Monday to Friday grind as a small-time solicitor – a job about to become yet more unbearable when he discovers Jules’ one-time love interest Piers has bought the firm and will be Rob’s new boss.
Tony Price, the drunken has-been actor Piers charges Rob with landing as a client, hardly seems the Cupid to rejuvenate Rob’s marriage, especially as he’s still wrestling with the fallout from his own family breakup. And when Jules takes their son and moves back in with her parents, Tony’s half-arsed attempt at effecting a reconciliation – by inciting Rob to climb the trellis to Jules’ bedroom balcony following a heavy session at the pub – only serves to drive Jules further away.
Tony’s stubborn refusal to sign on the dotted line with Rob’s law firm finally gives Piers the excuse he’s been seeking to fire Rob and move in on Jules. A misreading of the relationship between Rob and Tony’s estranged daughter in turn propels Jules towards Piers and the life of ease he offers.
With Tony’s grudging help though, Rob gradually finds the inspiration to pour his heart into a play for Jules’ amdram group that can unite him with his son, and win back his life and Jules’ love.
