COMPS: PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN and THE BRAVE ONE.
This is a fresh take on the vigilante movie, where the inciting incident isn’t the usual bad, or violent act that’s done to the protagonist, or her family. It starts with her accidentally killing a child murder in self-defence, then making the snap decision to run away from the scene of her crime. This thrusts her into a violent, bloody journey that takes her to terrible dark places, making her do things she never thought she’d do. She is never the victim in this story but stands up for all the innocent people who are.
WHY THIS STORY NOW: With the rise of the ‘Me Too’ movement and the conviction and imprisonment of monsters like Jeffrey Epstein and Harvey Weinstein, there’s a huge appetite for stories of female empowerment and women taking control in a still largely patriarchal society. With the eye-opening popularity of challenging films like ‘The Sound of Freedom’, ‘You Were Never Really Here’ and ‘She Said’, we need to keep the spotlight on the grave consequences of sexual and physical abuse, rape, paedophilia and child sex trafficking more than ever. As these heinous problems of our broken society are not going away, and if anything, are just getting worse.
Before I started writing Overwhelming Darkness, I was watching many hours of news programmes every day and getting more and more angry and despondent about the skyrocketing number of reports detailing women and children being physically and sexually abused, trafficked and murdered at the hands of men, all over the world. I was at the point of getting ill because of all the negative news I was consuming every day and knew that I had to do something positive to channel my anger and frustration into something meaningful and creative. And that was the very real catalyst that led to me writing Overwhelming Darkness and choosing a strong, but disillusioned female protagonist for my story.
