This story actually started with a single image: a haunted jukebox tucked away in the corner of an old-time diner. Even though we’re firmly in the present day, I wanted Rosie’s Diner to have that classic, neon-lit 1950s soul. It creates such a cool backdrop for a drug sting that goes completely off the rails.
At its heart, this is a romance wrapped in a thriller. It’s about James and Mandy, and that intense, protective instinct that kicks in when someone you’re falling for is suddenly in the line of fire. I wanted to explore that shift from a quiet, romantic spark to the high-stakes desperation of a hostage situation.
To bring the diner to life, I’ve filled it with a colorful cast of regulars. Their presence makes the diner feel like a genuine respite for weary travelers and a well-established hangout for the locals, which makes it all the more intense when that peace is shattered. Having the jukebox blast unprompted warnings—like the rain-drenched, ominous notes of "Riders on the Storm"—adds that final layer of mystery. It’s George, the diner's ghostly lookout, watching over his favorite waitress to ensure she’s safe when danger falls.
