The Space is a sprawling nightclub located on the Hudson River side of lower Manhattan in the 1990s. The story is about the people who work and play there, about their personal lives and about The City itself and how all of those elements interact.
Autumn 1993, Tally, the proprietor of The Space puts her staff through their paces. Her late adoptive father, owner of the building when it was a Department Store, provides ghostly advice and occasional annoyance. Tally's nearly the same age stepmother arrives to create problems and everyone is trying to find their way, and Tally's birth mother is concerned about new construction in her Harlem neighborhood.

"The Space" is a chance to explore our current world by examining the 1990s New York Night Club scene and how current events then help to shape our way of thinking, now.
New York City, 1993 is the opening setting, and the city is a bit on edge because a terrorist attack occurred in February of that year. Security and safety suddenly are a way of life, and that's reflected in how The Space is run.
Though there is a Democratic President in the White House, and New York's first ever African American Mayor at Gracie Mansion, things are starting to change for The City. Law and Order is becoming a watchword, there is talk of cleaning up the Subway system, Times Square and the homeless population. The race for City Hall between incumbent David Dinkins and challenger Rudy Giuliani is a part of all of this.
Tally Moore, owner of the nightclub is dealing with her staffers, a motley crew of friends and workers who she cares about and supports. And when she wants some advice, she talks with the ghost of her adoptive father, Joe Strawmaker of Strawmaker's Department Store, which was the previous tenant of The Space before Tally converted it into the club.
The interpersonal relationships of the members of the staff and the patrons who attend form the basis of the action. And with the nightclub setting, every episode is a brand new party with new excitement and fun, new challenges and drama.
