Creating the Comic Premise
Part of class The Lie That Tells the Truth: Developing a Killer Comedy Premise
We all know that a logline is an essential selling tool, and we know what a typical logline looks like: "When [inciting event] occurs, a [character trait] protagonist must [dynamic action] to overcome [central conflict/stakes/obstacle]."
But a lot of the stuff we learn or read in screenwriting books focus on DRAMA (read: rules) and don't necessarily apply or even work when it comes to writing comedy. There’s another way of thinking about creating a workable premise, especially for a comedy.
In this two hour interactive lecture and Q&A, you’ll learn how to construct a great premise that has the potential to develop into the sharpest, funniest version of your comic idea.
In addition to having taught at UCLA, NYU, Yale and other universities, Steve Kaplan created the HBO Workspace, the HBO New Writers Program and was co-founder and Artistic Director of Manhattan Punch Line Theatre.
