STORY ESSENTIALS: Mastering Premise, POV & Protagonist

Part of class Story & Script Essentials: A Masterclass on the fundamentals of screenwriting

Tips/Advice Storytelling Screenwriting ABCs Lesson

Summary

Most scripts never get readWhy?  Because in positioning their screenplay, most writers make it way too easy for producers to say no - before they even get to page one.

Before endlessly polishing, rewriting, fixing and tweaking your script, realize that the market buys concepts.

Veteran screenwriter, story consultant, film exec and producer Karel Segers has rejected hundreds of scripts.  In this in-depth seminar, he reveals why 83% of all projects are dismissed in seconds, even before the screenplays are read.  And he will teach you how to look at your own projects from their POV to ensure your concepts are compelling enough to demand they read the script.

Presented by

Karel Segers

Karel Segers is a veteran story consultant, writer, and producer with over 40 years in the international screen industry. He sold his first produced screenplay at 17, and later worked as Head of Programming and Acquisitions at the Digital Broadcasting Co. in London. He hosted a weekly movie segment on MTV Europe and negotiated film deals for Canal+, Europe’s largest pay-TV group.

After relocating to Australia in 2001, Karel produced and co-produced several shorts, documentaries, and features. He’s the founder of The Story Department, Logline It, and Immersion Screenwriting, and is known for his market-driven, hands-on approach to story development: blending Joseph Campbell's structure with contemporary screen models.

Karel has consulted for screen agencies, producers, and writers across five continents, with clients including the New Zealand Film Commission, Screen Canberra, ABS-CBN Star Cinema, and Deloitte. He has lectured at universities and film schools around the world.

A Masterclass on Premise, POV & Protagonist - Three essentials to an engaging story

To think like a producer, you must sniff out...
  • A weak premise.
  • A muddy point of view.
  • A passive protagonist.
If any of these fail, your script is dead on arrival.

What You’ll Learn

- How they know you have a week Act 2 before you do
- Who should be the main character in your story
- Why your story happens in the first place
- The flip side of the passive protagonist
- What nobody ever tells you about loglines
- How to pressure-test your story idea early
- The best of Egri, Mamet, and Aristotle.

This class will make it easy to fix your concept and hard for producers to say no.
