In Medellin, Colombia, a young girl, YOLANDA, watches horrified through a hotel window as her father is gunned down.
In New York, MILES, a rising tennis star, attends a party where he meets a BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. While they are together he receives a phone call notifying him that his father was gunned down at the family home in Miami.
In Miami, Miles avoids the press around his parent’s house by sneaking in through the garage. In the garage he sees the car where his father was murdered. The car hasn’t been cleaned and bits of skull and blood from the gunshots fill the front seat. Miles gets into the car, sits in the blood, and mourns his father.
Miles’ action disturbs the evidence and earns him the ire of the police detective assigned to the case. Because Miles’ father once worked for the DEA, and due to the nature of his death, LUCIEN and JACK, two DEA Agents, get involved in investigating the murder. Miles learns from them that his father left the DEA when he was photographed during an operation the US wasn’t supposed to be involved in, namely, the killing of “The King of Colombia,” a notorious Colombian drug lord.
As Miles straightens out his father’s business affairs, he discovers that his father made a lot of phone calls to a woman named YVONNE. He further discovers that his father planned to merge his business with hers the day after his murder. His untimely death has left the family in severe financial difficulty. Miles tracks down Yvonne’s most recent address - a palatial home where the gatekeeper denies any knowledge of her – and ultimately discovers that she and his father were having an affair.
Miles heads to a club to drink down his dismay. He’s kidnapped in the parking lot and taken to a house in the slums where he is kept handcuffed to the exposed shower plumbing of a tiny, dingy bathroom. He discovers he can communicate through these pipes with another prisoner held in the room above him – Yvonne.
Yvonne is here because she found out her boyfriend, ARMAND, their kidnapper, hired the assassins that killed Miles’ father. Miles is here because he found Armand’s house, the palatial home Miles had tracked Yvonne to. Miles and Yvonne commiserate over the horrible things they’d like to do to Armand and Yvonne offers to reactivate the proposed merger with his father’s company. But before they can escape, Armand learns of the “piped” conversations between Yvonne and Miles, and Miles hears him shoot Yvonne.
Miles’ father taught him meditation techniques he used to stay calm before a tennis match. He uses these techniques now to control his panic. SKINNY, another kidnapper, is so impressed with Miles’ ability to stay calm in the face of death he thinks Miles is a spiritual teacher. Miles uses Skinny’s belief to persuade Skinny to help him escape.
Skinny takes Miles to his house. Skinny’s wife has no idea what he’s involved in and is distraught when Armand and his men come to their house, forcing them to flee through a hidden tunnel. Skinny sets Miles free in downtown Miami.
The next morning, Miles leads Lucien and Jack to Skinny’s house where they learn how to find Skinny. Skinny tells them the address of the house where Miles was held, but when they get there, to Miles’ consternation, they find no evidence of Yvonne’s murder in the room above the bathroom where Miles was held. Then they get a call that the motel where Skinny was held has been bombed, and Skinny is dead.
Miles goes alone back to Armand’s now empty palatial house. He sits in a hidden alcove, dealing with his grief, trying to puzzle out the pieces of what’s going on. Suddenly the house video cameras, whose cables all appear to be cut, come to life. Miles, hidden, watches surprised as the Beautiful Woman he slept with the night his father was killed comes into the house and disappears through a hidden door in the pantry.
It turns out the Beautiful Woman is Yvonne and Yvonne has kidnapped KATY, Miles’ first love.
Miles, under heavy surveillance from the DEA, carries a satchel full of cash into a cemetery filled with people celebrating the “Day of the Dead.” He finds Katy dressed as the Virgin Death. Beneath her costume she wears a bomb strapped to her chest. Miles must leave the satchel among the other offerings to the Virgin Death. Miles sets the satchel down.
The mix of Day of the Dead celebrants suddenly becomes a mob that grabs Miles, removes his clothes and brushes a hidden microphone out of his hair, and dresses him in a white voodoo robe. He’s hustled into the midst of a group of white-robed voodoo dancers, which effectively screen tracking security personnel out. He’s thrust into the mechanical compartment of a Day of the Dead float. There he is joined by Katy, who still wears a bomb, and Yvonne.
As the float lurches down the crowd-lined parade route, Miles accuses Yvonne of really being Yolanda, daughter of the King of Colombia whom his father killed. Yvonne/Beautiful Woman/Yolanda acknowledges her identity and her quest for justice by making Miles’ family suffer everything her family has suffered. She has inherited the drug business from her father and is now the Miami Connection Armand works for. Her final step in the process is to get Miles to betray everything his father worked for by joining her in the business. His job would be to use his father’s business to launder money. If he says yes, Miles will be rich, his mother will be allowed to live, and Katy will be set free after he has committed the crime of his first money laundering transaction. If he says no, they will all die.
Miles holds Katy close to him, the bomb between them, and says no. Through a slatted view-hole he sees Jack on the float motioning for him to get down. He pulls Katy to the floor with him and Jack shoots and kills Yvonne.
In Glendale, California, Miles drives up to the home where he now lives with his mother, his wife Katy, and their infant son.
